ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical practice that employs the use of very fine needles inserted into acupoints on channels or energy pathways said to be found on the surface of the body. Acupuncture is frequently used to reduce pain and inflammation and can be applied to a variety of conditions and diseases such as stroke, paralysis, allergies, asthma, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, digestive disorders, women’s reproductive disorders, cardiovascular disorders, sleep disorders etc.. 

What to expect when you come to receive acupuncture: 

Dr. Guetio will take your health history on your first visit followed by an acupuncture treatment. The initial visit will be a little longer because of the time needed for the consultation before treatment can begin.  Acupuncture includes the use of needles as well as several adjunctive therapies that support or enhance the effect of the needles such as moxibustion, cupping, herbal cake moxa, ear seed therapy and herbal supplements. Moxa is an herb that is rolled in paper and burned while holding it close to the skin to heat an acupoint to reduce pain or disperse the energy of an acupoint. Cupping employs the use of small glass cups for suction on the skin over acupoints or over painful areas to increase circulation or draw out toxicity. Herbal cake moxa are applied to acupoints for pain reduction and can be retained for several days for continued pain relief after treatment.  Seeds or magnets can be applied to acupoints on the ears and retained for several days to enhance and extend the effects of acupuncture treatments. Herbal supplements might be prescribed according to the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine once the patient’s state of health has been assessed in the initial consultation. The number of acupuncture sessions and the types of adjunctive therapies applied will be determined by Dr. Guetio once treatment begins and degree of progress is noted.
